IMPORTANT
Keep these operating system considerations in mind:
  • Universal C Runtime (CRT) is a Windows operating system component that enables core functionality on the Windows operating system. It was introduced in Windows 10 and distributed to most computers running earlier supported operating systems. This component is present on computers that have been kept up to date.
When installing the Logix Designer application on computers that have not been updated, a prompt displays to install Universal C Runtime or to update the computer to at least the Microsoft April 2014 update roll-up.
  • While the Windows 8.1 and later operating systems run on many touch-enabled devices, various features of the Logix Designer application may not be touch-enabled. Most functions are expected to work with touch, but the software has only been tested with a keyboard and mouse.
  • Logix Designer was tested with UAC set to the most restrictive level (Always notify). This version of the Logix Designer application is also expected to operate correctly when UAC is configured for any less restrictive setting.

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6
IMPORTANT
When installing version 33.00 of the Logix Designer application, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 is installed automatically. However, when installed on 32-bit Windows operating systems, .NET Framework 4.6 causes versions 23 and earlier of the Logix Designer application to fail on startup. Also, when previous versions of Logix Designer are installed after version 31.00, .NET Framework 4.6 may cause these earlier versions of the Logix Designer application installation to fail.

This version of the Logix Designer application is expected to operate correctly on all other editions and service packs of these operating systems, but has not been tested:
Windows 10 (versions 1607, 1703, 1709, 1809)
Windows 7
Windows Server 2008 R2
Windows 8
Windows Server 2012

These prerequisite software are required with this version of Logix Designer application and will be installed with this release:
FactoryTalk® Services Platform v6.20
FactoryTalk® Activation Manager v4.04 (v4.05 is acceptable to use with v33.00 of the Logix Designer application)
FactoryTalk® Linx™ v6.20
RSLinx Classic v4.20
FactoryTalk® View Site Edition (SE) software and FLEX Ex communication software are required to use alarming capabilities fully.
Check the software requirements for other Rockwell Software® products that will be installed to be sure that these products are also compatible with the system.

Firmware requirements
To check and download the firmware compatible with this version of the Logix Designer application, use the Product Compatibility and Download Center (http://compatibility.rockwellautomation.com/Pages/MultiProductDownload.aspx?crumb=112).
Logix 5000 controllers and ControlLogix Motion modules must contain a revision of firmware that is compatible with this version of the Logix Designer application. The firmware images for most of the supported modules are contained on a DVD-ROM shipped with Rockwell Software Studio 5000 Automation Engineering & Design Environment™.
graphic
Tip: Most modules use Flash-ROM for the storage of firmware. If a module requires a firmware change, use the ControlFLASH™ tool or the ControlFLASH Plus™ tool to perform the update to the Flash-ROM. These tools are contained in the downloaded image or on a DVD-ROM shipped with the Logix Designer application. Another option is to update the firmware automatically as part of the project download.
For additional information and assistance in performing a Flash-ROM update, review the ControlFLASH Firmware Upgrade Software User Manual, publication 1756-UM105, or the ControlFLASH Plus Quick Start Guide, publication CFP-QS001.

Features

This release includes the following system features.

System features for Studio 5000 Logix Designer, version 33.00.00

Logix Designer application version v33.00 has these new and enhanced features and new supported hardware.

New features
P-controllers
Use the Controller Properties dialog box PlantPAx® tab to configure the Use PlantPAx Tasking Model and Instruction Usage P-Controller properties. The PlantPAx tab is available only for the CompactLogix 5380 and ControlLogix 5580 P-controllers.
Use the PlantPAx built-in instructions to monitor and process discrete and analog inputs and outputs for controlling devices. PlantPAx instructions are available only on ControlLogix 5380P and 5580P controllers. The PlantPAx instructions configuration dialog boxes are not localized.
The P-Controllers support these features:
-Instruction usage
The Instruction Usage feature assists users in identifying heavy controller loads by showing in an Instruction Usage table the number of each instruction type used in each task. Fine tune the execution load by choosing to include a combination of P-controllers, non P-controllers, or Add-On Instructions. Export PlantPAx Instruction Usage data as an L5K file in CSV format.
-Tasking model
Tasking Modeling provides a predefined set of tasks with a default configuration and editing restrictions to assist in creating projects that conform to Rockwell Automation® recommendations for the P-Controller.
-HART digital data
The Process Analog HART (PAH) instruction provides HART digital data for an intelligent analog device alongside the analog input (PAI) or analog output (PAO) instruction for that device. The PAH instruction provides:
HART Dynamic Variables (PV, SV, TV and QV) values with engineering units and variable status, and the digital value of the device’s analog loop current (in milliamps DC).
Analog range (min, at 4 mA, and max, at 20 mA).
Analog units of measure.
Device information such as Tag and Description text.
Additional device status (HART “Command 48 additional status” bit array).
Lookup of diagnostic message and severity based on the Command 48 bits that are set (for the first three diagnostics found in the array).
Additional status information received from the device via HART, such as Field Device Status bits.

Redundancy support in new ControlLogix 5580 standard controllers
Redundancy supports Logix architecture for high availability systems in the ControlLogix 5580 standard controllers. Redundancy consists of identical controllers in primary and secondary chassis, with fault tolerance that allows for switchover to the secondary in the event of a primary failure. Choose to enable redundancy when configuring the project. ControlLogix 5580 redundancy does not support the controller web page feature.

Automatic Diagnostics
Automatic Diagnostics is a system-level feature in CompactLogix 5380, CompactLogix 5480, ControlLogix 5580, Compact GuardLogix 5380, and GuardLogix 5580 controllers that provides device diagnostics to HMIs and other clients, with zero programming. The diagnostics include device description conditions and state events.
Automatic Diagnostics is enabled by default with firmware revision 33.00 or later. You can disable and enable the whole feature while online or offline from the Controller Properties dialog box. You can also disable Automatic Diagnostics for a specific device in the device’s configuration.

Controller web page
For controller types that support controller web pages, a check box was added to the Controller Properties dialog box Security tab that enables access to web pages that track controller, network, and backplane performance. A message explains when the web page setting is overridden by CIP Security and is different than or the same as the project setting. ControlLogix 5580 redundancy does not support the controller web page.

Enhanced features
Adding extended properties to alarm messages and Add-On Instructions
Use the Alarm Message Editor to add extended properties to alarm messages and to Add-On Instructions. Adding extended properties to a message or an AOI makes the values in the properties available for use by some Rockwell Automation HMIs. Add extended properties to both instruction-based alarm messages and tag-based alarm messages.

Sorting alarms by state while online
In the Alarm List, use the State column header to sort alarms based on their current state when online with the controller. Alarms are listed according to priority, with the most severe states, Alarm Fault and In Alarm, listed at the top.

Navigating to cross references for alarm input and target tags
In the Alarm List, right-click an alarm and select Go To Cross Reference For Input Tag or Go To Cross Reference For Target Tag to navigate to the input tag or the target tag for the alarm. The input tag for an alarm drives the alarm state, and the target tag for an alarm is a tag that is used to evaluate the alarm's condition.

Navigating to first and next destructive references for a tag
Use the First destructive reference and Next destructive reference commands to find and navigate to destructive references for a tag. If an instruction can overwrite a tag value, the instruction is a destructive reference for that tag.

Additional Function Block Functions and 64-bit data type instruction support
Use Function Block functions for mathematical, comparison, and logical operations. The Logix Designer application version v33.00 release includes 16 new functions for Advanced Math instructions, Math Conversion instructions, and Trigonometry instructions. This release also extends support to 24 more instructions for LINT, LREAL, USINT, UINT, UDINT, and ULINT data types, which were introduced in version 32. This support allows operators within expressions to use these new data types. In addition, suffixes for literals of these data types are now case-insensitive.

Controller and Logical Organizers
When you close the open project or the Logix Designer application, the <Product-Name_RSL5K) application saves and stores the last known expansion states for all high-level folders within the Controller Organizer and Logical Organizer.

Exporting files
When exporting files, to clearly identify the type of file being exported, the Logix Designer application appends the component type to the file name.

Logix Emulate
Updated the process for connecting a Studio 5000 Logix Emulate controller to a remote computer.

Corrected Anomalies in This Release

This release corrects the following anomalies.

Corrected anomalies for Studio 5000 Logix Designer, version 33.00.00

Add-On Instructions

In source protected Add-On Instructions, the boxes in the Alias For column for Input and Output parameters appear editable. However, they are read-only, and an error appears when editing is attempted.

This anomaly first identified in version 31.00. (Lgx00217846, Lgx00217855)

Add-On Instruction tag members copied incorrectly
Some PlantPAx P_PIDE Add-On Instruction instance values were set to denormalized low REAL values upon import of a P_PIDE 4.00.00 Add-On Instruction into a project that contained a P_PIDE 3.5.xx Add-On Instruction.
This anomaly first identified in version 18.00. (Lgx00214079)

Overwrite function did not work on Add-On Instruction import
An imported Add-On Instruction with identical logic with the project Add-On Instruction and different Local Tag values did not overwrite the project Add-On Instruction when the user selected Overwrite.
This anomaly first identified in version 32.00. (Lgx00226857, Lgx00227343)

Invoking an Add-On Instruction index causes the Logix Designer application to stop responding
Invoking an Add-On Instruction with tag based alarms, an array with 100 elements, and an index as a DINT assigned a constant value, caused the Logix Designer application to stop responding.
This anomaly first identified in version 32.00. (Lgx00231424, Lgx00231768, Lgx00232214)

Major fault in rung calling imported Add-On Instruction
The Logix controller generated a major fault when an Add-On Instruction was imported into the project with an edited import file that was improperly formatted.
This anomaly first identified in version 28.00. (Lgx00221180, Lgx00230009, Lgx00230010, Lgx00230011, Lgx00230012)

Anomalous behavior using indirect addressing to a Boolean tag within an Add-On Instruction data type
Anomalous behavior sometimes occurred when using indirect addressing to a Boolean tag within an Add-On Instruction data type containing an alias parameter.
This anomaly first identified in version 28.03. (Lgx00221210, Lgx00221328, Lgx00221329, Lgx00221330, Lgx00221331)

Add-On Profiles

1794 HART module connection fails
When the module definition is set to Analog and HART PV, the connection sometimes fails with 1794 modules: 1794-IE8HB, 1794-IF8IH, 1794-OE8HB, and 1794-OF8IH.
This anomaly first identified in version 30.00 (Lgx00229381)

Source Protection

Instructions in routines protected with License Based Source Protect give wrong results
Several instructions (ADD, SUB, MOV) in a routine protected with License Based Source Protection give wrong results. These instructions use arguments that are directly referencing Public parameters from another Program and these Public parameters in the other program are aliases to members of a Local array. When running, the values of these specific arguments are taken from Public parameters within the same Program where the routine resides. The error occurs only when a licensed source protected routine directly references an Input or Public alias parameter belonging to a different program. All versions of License Source Protection are affected.
This anomaly first identified in version 30.00. (Lgx00218846, Lgx00219001, Lgx00219002, Lgx00219003)

Logic

New tag row in the Tag Editor might disappear after creating a new tag in a safety project
Safety controller projects sometimes failed to display the new tag row in the Tag Editor when a new tag was created and a description entered. The new tag was created successfully but did not display in the Tag Editor.
This anomaly first identified in version 32.00. (Lgx00217554)

Inserting JSR, SBR, and RET Function Block instructions in a built or downloaded routine fails to update the <Product_Name_RSL5K) view
After a project has been built or has been downloaded to the controller, and a JSR, an SBR, and an RET instruction block are added to the Function Block routine, the Logix Designer application does not update the <Product_Name_RSL5K) project. If the project is downloaded to the controller again, the <Product_Name_RSL5K) view, unchanged project is downloaded.
This anomaly first identified in version 32.00. (Lgx00217843, Lgx00217857, Lgx00218031, Lgx00218032, Lgx00218033, Lgx00218034)

Converting a project from version 10.00 to version 32.00 sometimes caused an error
An error sometimes occurred when a project saved in version 10.00 was converted to version 32.00.

Functional Changes

This release has the following functional changes from the previous release.

Functional changes for Studio 5000 Logix Designer, version 33.00.00

Logix Designer version 33.00 has these changes in functionality since the last release.

Features not supported with redundancy

These features are not supported after redundancy is enabled:

License Source Control
Controller Ethernet port
Event tasks
Inhibited tasks
Motion groups, axes, and coordinate systems
Unicast connections

For additional information about redundancy restrictions and functionality, refer to these user manuals:

ControlLogix Redundancy User Manual, publication no. 1756-UM535.
ControlLogix 5580 Redundant Controller User Manual, publication no. 1756-UM015.

Invalid LEN member of a string now generates a minor fault

In Logix Designer releases v32.00 and earlier, string comparison instructions (EQU, for example) do not reflect an error in rung condition output when the LEN member of a string is invalid (larger than the number of characters the buffer can hold). In v33.00, the instruction generates a minor fault and sets the rung to false. After you update to v33.00 software and firmware, projects that contain an invalid string error behave differently: rungs that were true now become false.

Test conversion of project containing locked routines or Add-On Instructions

Rockwell Automation recommends testing conversion of projects that contain locked routines or locked Add-On Instructions before distribution. Some projects require unlocking of routines and Add-On Instructions before the project can successfully convert to this version of the Logix Designer application. (Lgx00221920)

AutoTune in Full and Profession editions of the Logix Designer application

Starting with version 33.00, the AutoTune license is removed from Full and Professional editions of the Logix Designer application. AutoTune is available as an Add-On to all editions.

Communications software

Starting with Logix Designer application version 33.00, the default communication software is FactoryTalk Linx. If another version of the Logix Designer application has not been installed on the machine, then FactoryTalk Linx is the default communication software. If a previous version of the Logix Designer software was installed on the machine, then the previously chosen communication software will be used. FactoryTalk Linx communication software must be used to support CIP Security communication with controllers.
To change the communication software:
Open Logix Designer.
Close any open projects.
Select Communications > Select Communication Software.
In Select Communication Software, choose FactoryTalk Linx, then select OK.
A verification message appears with information about some controllers not being supported by FactoryTalk Linx. Select OK.

Supported Logix Controllers

While the programming software continues to extend its functionality with each new release, the physical controllers that it supports will vary. New controllers are added, and in some cases, support for existing controllers may be removed. While a specific controller may not be supported by the current release, the side-by-side installation of multiple versions of the software will, in most cases, provide a means to support the older hardware. If migrating from one controller to another, a project created for one controller can be easily converted to another controller using the Controller Properties configuration dialog box within the software.

If opening a project that is configured for a controller that is no longer supported and the older version of software is not installed, the software will provide an appropriate warning and will automatically provide the option to convert the project to one of the controllers supported by the release.

The table provides a breakdown of the various Logix 5000 controllers and the initial or minimum version of Logix Designer application that is required to support the controller.

Launching with Ctrl + Shift does not reset Controller Organizer

One method to restore or reset Workstation Options is to hold Ctrl + Shift, launch the Logix Designer application, and continue to hold Ctrl + Shift until the application is fully launched.

However, when this restore method is used and the Windows User Account Control (UAC) setting is set at a level higher than Never notify, a UAC dialog box sometimes appears containing the following message:

Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?

Clicking Yes on the dialog box while continuing to hold Ctrl + Shift, the Workstation Options are not reset.

To reset Workstation Options, use one of these workarounds:

Temporarily set UAC to Never notify.
Release Ctrl + Shift, click Yes on the dialog box, and then immediately hold down Ctrl + Shift.
Open the Logix Designer application, click Tools > Options to open the Workstation Options dialog box, and for each Workstation Option category, click Reset Category.

Default font type and size for Structured Text Editor

Starting with version 31.00 of Logix Designer application, the default font type size for the Structured Text Editor changed from Courier New size 8 to Consolas size 10. Since the Sequential Function Chart (SFC) Action uses structured text to execute assignments and instructions, this change makes the SFC Action larger causing the overlap of the SFC elements in projects converted from version 30.00 and earlier to version 31.00 and later.

To get the same SFC layout as in v30.00 and earlier:

Select Tools > Options.
In the Workstation Option, select Structured Text Editor > Font/Color.
In Font, choose Courier New.
In Size, choose 10

Converting a project with Function Block Diagram text boxes from version 11.00 of the RSLogix 5000 software to version 21.00 and later

To convert a project with a Function Block Diagram routine with text boxes from version 11.00 of RSLogix 5000 software to version 21.00 and later, use one of these steps:

Export the version 11.00 project file to an .L5K file, and then import the .L5K project file into version 21.00 and later.
Convert the project from version 11.00 to version 12.00 through version 20.00 before converting the project to version 21.00 and later.

Resize multiple large routines using Fit to Width command

The Logix Designer application may exceed memory when multiple large routines are opened and resized to fit the full window using the View>Zoom>Fit to Window command. To work around this issue, use the View>Zoom>Fit to Width command to set the zoom of the selected routines so that the entire width of the routine fits within the routine windows.

Trend server sometimes fails for multiple versions of the Logix Designer application

When versions 30.00 and 31.00 of the Logix Designer application are both installed on the same computer, and trending has never been run in the version 31.00.00 Logix Designer application, trending fails to run in the version 30.00 Logix Designer application. RSLinx Classic is the default communication software for Trend Server, which causes this behavior. After switching between FactoryTalk Linx and RSLinx Classic, the trend will not work for version 30.00. (Lgx00203589)

Add-On Instruction module references

Starting with version 24.00 of the Logix Designer application, modules can be accessed via module references. Because of this, program-scoped tags with the same names as modules ignore those modules in terms of logic references. For version 24.00.00 and later, when attempting to access modules via module reference from within the Logix Designer application, a warning message opens. If converting from a version earlier than version 24.00, the application returns a verification error.

Uninstalling the CodeMeter® kit causes Logix Designer uninstall to fail

If uninstalling the CodeMeter kit, which is installed with the FactoryTalk® Activation Manager, the Logix Designer application fails to uninstall. To restore the CodeMeter kit, uninstall the FactoryTalk Activation Manager and then reinstall it.

SequenceManager not available on Compact GuardLogix 5380, CompactLogix 5380, CompactLogix 5480, ControlLogix 5580, and GuardLogix 5580 controllers

The SequenceManager feature is not available for Compact GuardLogix 5380, CompactLogix 5380, CompactLogix 5480, ControlLogix 5580, and GuardLogix 5580 controllers in this release of the Logix Designer application.

Non-alphanumeric characters in a STRING need an escape carriage

When editing existing standard STRINGs or entering a new STRING, if there is a non-alphanumeric character in the STRING, such as a space, period or apostrophe, add an escape carriage.

Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.6 may cause failure in earlier versions of the Logix Designer application

For installations of version 32.00 of Logix Designer, Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6 is installed automatically. However, .NET Framework 4.6 can cause these issues:

When previous versions of Logix Designer are installed after version 30.00, .NET Framework 4.6 may cause installation to fail for these earlier versions of the Logix Designer application.

When installed on 32-bit Windows operating systems, .NET Framework 4.6 causes versions 23.00 and earlier of the Logix Designer application to fail on startup.

Follow one of these steps to work around the issue:
Do not install version 30.00 of the Logix Designer application on a 32-bit Windows operating system on which version 23.00 or earlier of the Logix Designer application is installed.

Contact Rockwell Automation Support for instructions on disabling the Logix Designer Start page on versions 23.00 or earlier. Disabling the Start page allows the Logix Designer application to start and run.

Signatures break for Add-On Instructions from earlier releases

When using version 29.00 or later to open a project from a release earlier than version 29.00, the signature breaks for any Add-On Instruction included in the project. In the same way, when importing an Add-On Instruction from a project created in a release earlier than version 29.00, the signature breaks for that Add-On Instruction. Un-seal and then re-seal each Add-On Instruction to get a new signature.

Kinetix® Encoder Emulator RPI must match the Motion Task update rate

The Requested Packet Interval (RPI) setting for the Kinetix Encoder Emulator must match the Motion Group Base Update period. If the RPI setting and the Motion Group Base Update period do not match, output can fail from the Encoder Emulator.

Large font size cuts off Network Settings and DHCP labels

When the font size in Windows 7 is set to 125%, the labels in the Network Settings and DHCP properties of BOOTP-DHCP Server application are cut off, making them unreadable. They are also dislocated, where they do not match with the proper input fields.

Drive safety instructions Boolean members

Some Boolean members of the AxisSafetyFaults attribute were renamed and some were added to support the drive safety instructions. If a member of the AxisSafetyFaults is used in logic, the logic will not compile until the old axis Boolean attribute is replaced with the new name.

Versions 18.00 and later require updates to Custom Motion Database

To initiate the process of getting the database updated, please email the request to raeptechsupport@ra.rockwell.com. Please include any prior tech support case number if the current database includes non-Rockwell motors.

Locked routines from earlier releases must be unlocked and re-locked before download

When using version 32.00 to open a project from a release earlier than version 32.00, any routines that are locked in the project will not download to a controller. Before downloading the project, open the project in version 32.00, unlock the routines, and then re-lock them. Download the project with the re-locked routines to the controller.
